Fakes & Manners

2011

Title: Fakes & Manners
Written: 4th May 2011
Written by: Elayne Harrington
Artist Name: Temper-Mental MissElayneous
Originally Performed As: Acapella rap / spoken word
Later Developed As: Spoken word with bodhrán accompaniment
Then Further Developed As: A live rap performance piece, performed multiple times to Moschops’ beat production

About the Work:
Fakes & Manners is an early lyrical and performative work written in 2011. It navigates intersections of voice, visuality, and identity. The piece has been presented across several evolving formats—spanning live performance, video, installation, and music.

Following interdisciplinary adaptations, a handwritten manuscript and visual exploratory pages were submitted to the UCD Irish Poetry Reading Archive. These materials—photographic, text-based, and performative—are digitised and held in hardcopy by UCD Library as part of its Digital Library collections.

Versions & Collaborations:
Spoken Word Video Version (2025, in progress):
Features Céad Míle (Fail)te, an installation artwork by Aoife Ward. This version centres on durational performance within a site-specific art context, capturing the artist in relation to the installation over time.

Bodhrán Accompanied Performance Version (2025):
Performed live in dialogue with ________ Was Here, a participatory school desk installation. The performance references the endurance-based work Take Up Your Desk And Walk as well as use of a found object (blackboard) linked with a 2025 rendition of the 2019 improvisational Miscellaneous performance artwork and installation

Music Video Version (2025, in production):
This full-length piece includes cameos and collaborative elements from peers and contemporaries across the faith, literary, education, community, and arts spheres. It will feature site-specific installations and fashion design by Jessica Brennan. Two found objects play a central role in the visual and symbolic language of the work.
